A Study on the Usage of the Quantifiers Many, Most, and Some in English (December 12, 2018)
This two-part project was from a semantics Linguistics course in university. For the first part of the project, we were to write and administer a small research survey on the use of certain quantifiers. For my project, I decided to check out quantifiers “many,” “most,” and “some.” The goal of the project was to try and find out if there is a particular set of rules for when people use these quantifiers. I designed the survey to include different images with fill-in-the-blank questions about the quantifiers. For example, I drew ten boxes with three open and the rest closed. Then I asked the subject to fill in the blank for the prompt “______ of the boxes are closed.” Then, I might give the subject a similar prompt later on with six boxes closed to see their response.
I have attached here the original research survey if you would like to take it yourself. Also, I have attached my analysis for those interested.
